Vol. 508 No. 4

Written Answers. - Radon Gas Levels.

Dinny McGinley

Question:

107 Mr. McGinley asked the Minister for Public Enterprise if a survey has been conducted to ascertain the incidence of radon gas in Donegal, particularly in schools; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [19287/99]

The monitoring of radiation levels in the State, including the monitoring of radon gas levels is a statutory function of the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland and is not a matter in which my Department is directly involved.

The institute recently completed its nationwide radon survey of domestic dwellings in all 26 counties, the results of which are available on the institute's website at www.rpii.ie. The institute is also conducting, on behalf of the Department of Education and Science, a nationwide survey of radon levels in primary and post-primary schools, including schools in Donegal. The nationwide survey is expected to be completed in October 2001.
