Vol. 508 No. 5

Written Answers. - Tax Bands.

Paul McGrath

Question:

80 Mr. McGrath asked the Minister for Finance the number of taxpayers who would be removed from paying tax at the higher rate by broadening the lower rate tax band by £1,000, £2,000 and £3,000. [19366/99]

I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that the information requested, estimated by reference to the income tax year 2000-01, is as follows.

Changes

Numbers removed from top rate of tax

Standard tax band £14,000-£28,000:

increase by £1,000

58,000

increase by £2,000

113,500

increase by £3,000

164,300

These figures are provisional and are likely to be revised.
It is assumed that the increases in the single person's standard rate band must be combined with double those increases for married persons assessed to tax on the aggregate basis.
