I am informed by the Revenue Commissioners that some 20 officers are being involved in the investigation at this stage. The preliminary work suggests that the tax liabilities of more than 120 individuals will have to be reviewed. In addition, a substantial number of associated persons, including individuals, companies and discretionary trusts, along with professional advisers and some financiers may have to be investigated. The Revenue investigations will include consideration of prosecutions for Revenue offences where sufficient evidence can be obtained.
The officers assigned to the work have available to them appropriate back-up from experienced special inquiry branch, capital taxes and anti-avoidance staff. I am advised that Revenue's assignments are adequate to advance the investigation at this stage and that further resources, including legal expertise, will be added as the work develops. It is being treated as a priority call on resources.
