Vol. 509 No. 1

Written Answers. - Anti-Social Behaviour.

Seán Haughey

Question:

242 Mr. Haughey asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the plans, if any, he has to extend the provisions of the Housing (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 1997, which deals with anti-social behaviour by tenants to householders; his views on whether the law is weak in this regard; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19507/99]

The provisions of the Housing (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act, 1997 in relation to anti-social behaviour are directly linked with the statutory estate management responsibility of housing authorities in relation to dwellings owned and rented by the authority. Local authorities do not have a similar estate management responsibility in relation to privately owned housing. The provisions of the 1997 Act are not, therefore, capable of extension to householders generally, who, to the extent that they may be engaged in anti-social behaviour are, of course, subject to the normal legal code which is a matter for the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform.
