Vol. 509 No. 1

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Pádraic McCormack

Question:

325 Mr. McCormack asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of psychologists and resource teachers appointed to schools in County Galway in 1999. [19451/99]

Eight resource teachers have been sanctioned to primary schools in County Galway in 1999. A further two resource teacher posts were allocated to second level schools in the county this year.

My Department provides a psychological service to all second level schools in County Galway. The schools are shared between two psychologists. A third psychologist provides a service to 24 primary schools in the county. No new appointments to the county have been made so far in 1999. However, interviews for additional psychologists to the newly established national educational psychological service agency are currently taking place. When the new psychologists are recruited, the needs of schools in all areas of the country, including County Galway, will be considered.
