Vol. 509 No. 1

Written Answers. - Pension Payments.

Pat Rabbitte

Question:

341 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Education and Science the position in respect of the serious backlog in paying arrears to teachers in respect of payment of pension increases to retired teachers; the reason for the continuing backlog; when all arrears and increases will be paid; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that these delays are the basis of considerable anger, hurt and concern to retired teachers; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19591/99]

Increases in pension have become payable to retired teachers and to the spouses of deceased teachers under the terms of the PCW agreement and Partnership 2000. All arrears due under both agreements have been paid in the case of the vast majority of pensioners and these pensioners are in receipt of the correct rate of pension. The work of calculating the final payments due is continuing in the case of the remaining pensioners and my Department expects to complete the work of making payment to retired teachers and the spouses of deceased teachers before Christmas 1999.
