Vol. 509 No. 1

Written Answers. - Visa Applications.

Michael Bell

Question:

80 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of visas issued to the crew of 80 employed on the drilling rig currently operated by a company (details supplied) off the west coast; the nationalities of each of the visa holders; the duration of each visa; if these visas are subject to renewal; if so, the date of renewal; his views on whether visas should be subject to work permits by the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Employment and only when Irish workers who have the skills required are not available; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [17306/99]

The Deputy will appreciate that EEA nationals – nationals of the EU plus Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein – are entitled to reside and take up employment in Ireland without the need to obtain a work permit or other permission. In so far as his query might relate to non-EEA nationals, I am, in response to his question, considering the applicability of our immigration legislation in the situation described and will communicate with him again in due course.
