Vol. 509 No. 1

Written Answers. - Car Theft.

Ivor Callely

Question:

108 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the reported number of unauthorised taking of vehicles for each of the years 1978, 1988, 1998 and to date in 1999; the number of deaths arising from joyriding accidents; the number of innocent pedestrians, motorists and passengers injured or killed in these joyriding accidents; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [19750/99]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the number of unauthorised takings reported for the years in question are as follows: 1978 – 17,710; 1988 – 10,915 and 1998 – 13,793. In the period January to July 1999 the number of unauthorised takings was 7,778.

I am also informed by the Garda authorities that the number of persons killed and injured in those years in joyriding accidents is not readily available. It would require a considerable amount of Garda time to compile these details.
