Vol. 509 No. 4

Other Questions. - Swimming Pool Projects.

Emmet Stagg

Question:

39 Mr. Stagg asked the Minister for Defence the position regarding the refurbishment of the swimming pool in the Curragh Camp; when the pool will be re-opened; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20454/99]

Detailed design drawings and specifications for the new pool are at an advanced stage of preparation. It is anticipated that the tender competition for the construction project comprising the new pool and the upgrade of the existing gymnasium will be held towards the end of next month and the contract will be in place early next year. It is anticipated that work on the project will commence in March 2000 and will take approximately 12 months to complete. It is expected that the pool will be in service immediately afterwards.

I tabled this question today because I have had a number of queries from parents and schools in the area about the possibility of speeding up the refurbishment process. I have complimented the Minister on previous occasions on making this facility available to schools but if possible the timescale should be tightened up as the lack of a pool at present is a major disadvantage to schools and children in the area.

As we work through the Estimates, I want to ensure that everything is in order for next year because substantial funds are involved in the refurbishment of the swimming pool and upgrading of the gymnasium. On the technical side, everything possible is being done to speed up the process. It is expected that work will commence in March of next year and that the pool will be available the following year. I understand pressure is being exerted on Deputies in Kildare because this facility had to be taken out of commission.

When the new pool is completed, it will be an outstanding facility and we are seeking to ensure that no time is lost in its early provision. I appreciate the Deputy's concern in regard to this matter. I have also been approached by Deputies Dukes, McCreevy and Power who are also concerned that the project should go ahead without delay. The funds are there and I will keep a close eye to ensure that no time is lost.

Will the Minister explicitly confirm that when the refurbishment is complete and the pool is reopened, access will be granted to local schools and community groups?

Absolutely.
