Vol. 509 No. 4

Written Answers. - Water and Sewerage Schemes.

Richard Bruton

Question:

281 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government if he has received submissions from Dublin Corporation seeking additional capital funding for the water supply system in the corporation and greater Dublin area; if so, the value of the investment sought; the amount of investment provided by his Department since he came to office for this purpose; the plans, if any, he has to invest in this infrastructure in 2000; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20784/99]

On 22 October 1998 local authorities were asked by my Department to undertake a formal assessment of the needs for capital works in their areas under the water services investment programme and to prepare prioritised lists of projects for the periods 2000 to 2006 and 2007 to 2020 based on the assessment. Dublin Corporations' estimate of their investment requirements for these periods is £214 million and £299 million respectively. The assessment will be taken into consideration by my Department in framing future water service investment programmes under the forthcoming national development plan. The investment programme for 2000 has not yet been decided.

Since 1997 water supply projects worth £113 million submitted by the Dublin authorities have been approved by my Department. Expenditure on such projects during the same period has amounted to £42 million.
