Vol. 509 No. 4

Written Answers. - Proposed Legislation.

Bernard Allen

Question:

311 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the plans, if any, he has to introduce legislation which will extend to grandparents the right of access to see their grandchildren. [20659/99]

I have no proposals for legislation of the kind referred to by the Deputy because the law, as recently amended, provides clarity on the matter. The Guardianship of Infants Act, 1964, as amended by the Children Act, 1997, already gives power to the court to make an order of access to a child by his or her grandparent. The conditions which apply to the making of such an order are set out in the amending legislation of 1997.
