Vol. 509 No. 4

Written Answers. - Garda Stations.

Jan O'Sullivan

Question:

325 Ms O'Sullivan asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the further progress, if any, made in planning for a new Garda station at Mary Street, Limerick; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20752/99]

The provision of a new Garda station at Mary Street, Limerick, is the subject of preparatory work within my Department, in conjunction with the Garda Síochána and the Commissioners for Public Works.

In this regard, I understand that the Garda authorities are currently assessing a sketch scheme for Mary Street. However, I further understand from the Commissioners for Public Works that, due to the possible archaeological importance of the site in question, an assessment of the full implications of proceeding with the construction of a new Garda station on the site is currently being investigated.

Progress in relation to the matter is, of course, also dependent upon overall priorities within the Garda building programme and the availability of resources.
