Vol. 509 No. 4

Written Answers. - Garda Stations.

Michael Creed

Question:

328 Mr. Creed asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of gardaí stationed at Ballincollig, County Cork, in each of the years 1970, 1975, 1980, 1985, 1990, 1995 and 1999; the proposals, if any, he has for an upgrade of the existing Garda barracks in the town; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20778/99]

The detailed allocation of Garda personnel and resources to individual areas is a matter for the Garda authorities who have informed me that the most readily available information in relation to personnel strength for Ballincollig Garda station is set out hereunder:

Year

Sergeant

Gardaí

Total

1989

2

15

17

1990

3

16

1995

14

1999*

18

20

(*Up to 30 September 1999)
It can be seen from these statistics that the overall personnel strength has increased considerably over the past ten years.
I am also informed that it is proposed to refurbish the existing station at Ballincollig and negotiations are ongoing between the Office of Public Works and the Department of Defence with a view to acquiring additional land adjacent to the station. It is not possible at this time to give a time frame for this project.
