Vol. 509 No. 4

Written Answers. - Leaving Certificate Examination.

John McGuinness

Question:

341 Mr. McGuinness asked the Minister for Education and Science if the grade awarded to a person (details supplied) in County Kilkenny will be reviewed in view of the fact that one of his papers was mislaid; if his Department will acknowledge the error and the college's explanation that the student could have achieved a higher grade; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [20347/99]

The position of the student concerned was fully reviewed by my Department under the leaving certificate result review process. In this case there was a dispute about the submission of certain material for examination. The Department applied the benefit of the doubt and ensured in the appeal process that the student was not disadvantaged. The chief examiner for the subject concerned is satisfied through the issue of a revised grade that full justice has been applied in the matter. In determining the matter the chief examiner had available to him the observations of the school concerned.

The Deputy will appreciate that while I have a responsibility as Minister to ensure that there are adequate procedures in place to deal with any issues that may arise on appeal it would be inappropriate for me to interfere in the operation of the system in an individual case.
