Vol. 509 No. 6

Written Answers. - Psychological Service.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

652 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Education and Science the additional educational psychologists, if any, which will be appointed in 1999 for primary schools; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [21845/99]

The report of the planning group on the establishment of a national educational psychological service recommended that 131 additional psychologists should be recruited on a phased basis over a period of five years.

I have accepted this recommendation and in 1999 a competition to appoint 25 additional psychologists for the National Educational Psychological Agency, NEPS, has been organised by the Civil Service Commission.
The recruitment of these 25 psychologists will increase the capacity of NEPS to provide a service to primary schools.
