Vol. 510 No. 4

Written Answers. - Disabled Drivers Scheme.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

65 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for Finance his views on whether the disabled drivers and passengers tax regulations should be extended and a fairly graded mobility allowance introduced; when the interdepartmental group to review the scheme was set up; if its report is available; when the Revenue Commissioners' review was established; if its report is available; and if changes will be made to the scheme in the context of the upcoming budget. [22392/99]

As the Deputy is no doubt aware, this scheme is under review by an interdepartmental group which was established in April 1998 and is chaired by the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform. The group will be arranging to meet with representatives of a number of organisations and with a number of persons who indicated a desire to make oral submissions. The information furnished at these meetings will facilitate the group in bringing its work to a conclusion and in finalising its report for consideration. It would therefore be imprudent of me to consider any amendments to the scheme until such time as the review is completed and its content is given due consideration.

While the Revenue Commissioners keep the scheme under ongoing review, they have just completed a technical review of the scheme and this document has recently been circulated to the members of the interdepartmental group.
