Vol. 510 No. 4

Written Answers. - Defence Forces Property.

Seán Power

Question:

88 Mr. Power asked the Minister for Defence if he has satisfied himself with the level of usage of St. Bricin's hospital by the Defence Forces. [22897/99]

The medical corps, as a constituent part of the Defence Forces, was examined by the efficiency audit group during its review of the Defence Forces. The review recommended the retention of one military hospital.

St. Bricin's hospital has been retained as the sole military hospital to meet patient and occupational medical requirements of the Defence Forces and to maintain military medical specialist skills.

A review of the provision of medical services to members of the Defence Forces is currently being carried out as part of the Department's expenditure review programme for 1999. Discussions are also continuing with the Department of Health and Children and the Mater Misericor diae hospital with a view to finalising a scheme to provide "step down" accommodation for civilian patients in St. Bricin's hospital.
