Vol. 510 No. 6

Written Answers. - Register of Lobbyists.

Deirdre Clune

Question:

194 Ms Clune asked the Minister for Finance the plans, if any, he has to bring forward legislation introducing a register for lobbyists requiring the declaration of the clients paying lobbyists; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23583/99]

There are a number of initiatives under way within which the activities of lobbyists are being considered. For example, a code of conduct for civil servants is in preparation which may address, inter alia, conflicts of interest which may arise from any business activity or employment of civil servants outside the Civil Service. In addition a standards in public office Bill dealing with a range of aspects of conduct in public life is being drafted. However, I have no plans for the drafting of legislation explicitly for the registration of lobbyists.
