Vol. 510 No. 6

Written Answers. - Voter Participation.

Jim O'Keeffe

Question:

72 Mr. J. O'Keeffe asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government his views on the fact that many young people are not put on the register when they reach 18 years; if he has studied the proposals of the National Youth Council of Ireland in this regard; and the plans, if any, he has to implement these proposals. [23278/99]

Eamon Gilmore

Question:

76 Mr. Gilmore asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the steps, if any, he will take to promote and facilitate greater voter turnout in elections, having regard to the particularly low poll in the recent Dublin South Central by-election; if he has considered the report prepared by the National Youth Council on voter turnout among young people; the plans, if any, he has to implement any of the recommendations made in the report; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23300/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 72 and 76 together.

I refer the Deputies to my reply to Question No. 33 on today's Order Paper.

Automatic registration of young people on reaching 18 years of age is one of a number of recommendations contained in the recent National Youth Council of Ireland report which will be considered in the Department.
