Vol. 511 No. 2

Written Answers. - Suicide Incidence.

Bernard J. Durkan

Question:

113 Mr. Durkan asked the Minister for Health and Children the plans, if any, he has to fund a public campaign to stem the suicide rate among young men; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [23978/99]

The final report of the National Task Force on Suicide was published in January, 1998 and marked the completion of detailed examination of the incidence of suicide and attempted suicide and outlined a comprehensive strategy to reduce the incidence of suicide and attempted suicide in Ireland. The key components of the overall strategy include the implementation of measures aimed at high risk groups; provision of information and training on suicide prevention to relevant professionals and organisations; the improvement of services which would benefit those at risk of suicide and those who attempt suicide; and the importance of research and suicide prevention programmes.

Good progress is being made on the implementation of these key components and I do not consider that a public campaign is warranted at this stage.
