Vol. 511 No. 2

Written Answers. - Special Areas of Conservation.

Breeda Moynihan-Cronin

Question:

143 Mrs. B. Moynihan-Cronin asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the reason only certain areas of the Sliabh Glenmore camp, County Kerry, are eligible for the special area conservation scheme; the proposals, if any, she has to include the remaining areas; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [23963/99]

The Deputy will be aware that the EU habitats directive lists habitats and species for which special areas of conservation must be designated. The directive requires member states to contribute sites for these habitats and species, in proportion to their representation within the national territories. The selection of sites is based on the findings of ecological surveys. I regret that I am unable to provide the Deputy with a definitive response in this matter in the absence of a large scale map indicating the precise lands in question. If the Deputy can supply such a map to Dúchas, the heritage service of my Department, I will be glad to have the matter investigated further. Alternatively, I would be glad to arrange for an official of Dúchas to meet on site with the Deputy or a person nominated by her.
