Vol. 511 No. 2

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Bernard Allen

Question:

156 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Education and Science the reason Carrignavar national school, Cork, lost its administrative post; and if he will review the post in view of the fact that the number of students in the school has increased recently. [23896/99]

The post of administrative principal was lost for the current school year due to a decline in the enrolment of the school. The staffing of a school for a particular year is determined by reference to the enrolment on 30 September of the previous year.

The authorised staffing based on the enrolment of 222 pupils in the school on 30 September 1998 warrants a staffing of principal and seven mainstream class teachers in the current school year. Eight mainstream class teachers are required to maintain the post of administrative principal.

I understand that the enrolment of the school on 30 September 1999 was 229 pupils which warrants the appointment of the eighth mainstream class teacher for the 2000-01 school year. This will, of course, be subject to the normal verification procedures.
