Vol. 511 No. 2

Written Answers. - School Accommodation.

Question:

165 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Education and Science when he will publish the findings of a survey conducted by his Department on the condition of facilities for the teaching of science at post-primary level; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24006/99]

In November 1998 I commissioned a national survey to ascertain the overall condition of science facilities in second level schools. The results of the survey have been assessed and they vindicate my announcement in March of this year to undertake a major investment in modernising school science laboratories. They will be published shortly.

This broad-ranging survey has identified a number of issues that are currently under consideration and which will inform my strategy to expend £13 million on science facilities over the next three years.

Question:

166 Dr. Upton asked the Minister for Edu cation and Science if he has received correspondence relating to science laboratory facilities at St. Michael's community college, Kilmihil, County Clare; if he will provide the necessary funding to remedy this situation; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24007/99]

An application from County Clare Vocational Education Committee for the provision of a science laboratory and preparation area at St. Michael's College, Kilmihil, is progressing through architectural planning.

The stage three submission, developed sketch scheme, of this project is currently being examined within my Department.
