Written Answers. - Proposed Legislation.

Brendan Howlin

Question:

33 Mr. Howlin asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands when preparation of the national monuments legislation will be completed; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [23697/99]

Brian O'Shea

Question:

138 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the proposals, if any, she has for the proposed review of the national monuments legislation; when the review will commence; when it will be finalised; the form the review will take; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [23871/99]

I propose to take Questions Nos. 33 and 138 together.

The Deputy may be aware that notices were placed in the main national newspapers on 15 November 1999 inviting submissions from interested parties in relation to a proposed review of the National Monuments Acts, 1930 to 1994, and related legislation, which I intend to carry out in the context of the preparation of a national heritage plan. I have requested that submissions on the review should reach my Department not later than 15 January 2000. A summary document outlining some key issues that have been identified is available from my Department and I am arranging to have a copy forwarded to the Deputies for information.

It is my intention that, following the completion of the public consultation phase, the review will lead to the drafting of consolidated and, where appropriate, revised and extended legislation for the protection of the archaeological, architectural, and historic heritage.
