Vol. 511 No. 2

Written Answers. - Archaeological Sites.

Austin Deasy

Question:

53 Mr. Deasy asked the Minister for Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands the progress made on the archaeological dig at Ahanagloch and Graigueshoneen, Kilmacthomas, County Waterford; if any significant discoveries have been made; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [23847/99]

An archaeological dig at Ahagloch and Graigueshoneen, Kilmacthomas, County Waterford, has been undertaken by archaeologists working on behalf of the Waterford road design office, which is project managing the N25 realignment. The site is a fulacht fiadh – a Bronze Age cooking mound. A series of linear ditches were also identified. Materials recovered from the site are of both domestic and industrial activity.

The archaeological interpretation of the recovered materials is currently being investigated and it is not possible, therefore, to comment on the significance of the finds. The National Museum of Ireland and Dúchas, the Heritage Service of my Department, are currently considering proposals for phase two of the archaeological excavations.
