Vol. 511 No. 3

Written Answers. - Sheep Rights.

Seán Power

Question:

124 Mr. Power asked the Minister for Defence the number of sheep rights on the Curragh; the way in which this is monitored; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24475/99]

There are currently 6,013 sheep rights on the Curragh which are owned by over 200 landowners and utilised by about 30 flock owners. Persons with authorised sheep rights are obliged to brand their sheep in accordance with the Curragh of Kildare Acts and by-laws enacted since 1870.

The activities of all users of the Curragh lands are monitored on an ongoing basis by the Department's staff.
