94 Mr. Quinn asked the Taoiseach the number of bicycles sold each year; the approximate number of bicycles in the State; the number of cyclists; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24078/99]
No data exists on the number of bicycles sold each year. However. an indication can be got from the trade statistics. The figures for 1998 indicate that 114,012 bicycles were imported into the State in that year. The corresponding figure for 1997 was 136,246.
Accordingly to the results of the quarterly national household survey for September to November 1998, approximately 550,000 households in the State had at least one bicycle.
The 1996 census of population provides an indication of the daily bicycle usage. At the time of the 1996 census, just over 99,000 persons travelled to work, school or college by bicycle. This can be broken down as follows:
