Vol. 511 No. 5

Written Answers. - Roads Funding.

David Stanton

Question:

76 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government further to Parliamentary Question No. 295 of 5 October 1999, the 27 applications submitted by Cork County Council to his Department for consideration under the 1999 EU co-finance scheme of grants; the way in which these projects were prioritised by Cork County Council or by his Department; the amount of funding required for each project; the projects selected; the criteria used in order to prioritise these projects; the cost of each project selected; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24770/99]

Details of the 27 applications submitted by Cork County Council to my Department for consideration under the EU co-financed scheme of grants in 1999 and the amount of funding sought for each project is set out in Table 1. Table 2 details the eight Cork County Council projects selected for funding in 1999 totalling £3,230,000. Applications are assessed in my Department with regard to the EU eligibility criteria, competing demands from other local authorities and the funds available; prioritisation is not sought from the local authorities concerned.

To qualify for a grant under the EU co-financed specific grants scheme, a project must satisfy the EU eligibility criteria, which means that it must have a demonstrable impact on employment and promote rural development-agriculture or economic activity in industry, tourism, agriculture, fisheries or forestry.
