Vol. 511 No. 6

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

John Bruton

Question:

377 Mr. J. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science if he will sanction the immediate appointment of a remedial teacher for Ratoath national school (details supplied) in view of the fact that a number of students are falling behind in their education; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [24872/99]

My priority in the current year was to ensure that all schools with a remedial need should have access to a remedial teacher service. I am pleased to say that this has now been achieved with the extension of the remedial service to every first and second level school in the country with a pupil teacher ratio of 10:1 or above.

The school to which the Deputy refers already has the services of a full-time remedial teacher. However, I can assure the Deputy that the remedial needs of the school will be fully considered in the event of additional resources becoming available to improve existing remedial services.
