Vol. 511 No. 6

Written Answers. - Services Sector.

Seán Barrett

Question:

95 Mr. Barrett asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment if she will appoint a dedicated Minister within her Department for the services industry; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [22173/99]

The services sector in Ireland is, without doubt, a dynamic source of job creation, revenue generation, export earnings and investment. As such, it has in recent years played a significant part in improving our competitiveness and overall economic performance.

The proposal made by the Deputy is one of several suggestions contained in the recent IBEC Services Council publication Services Industry: the Way Forward. I have instructed my officials to examine these carefully and to initiate further discussions with IBEC on the matter.
