Vol. 512 No. 3

Written Answers - Local Improvement Schemes.

Brendan Daly

Question:

244 Mr. Daly asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the number of applications received by Clare County Council for local improvement schemes; the number of schemes approved; the amount paid out for works under these schemes; the reason for any refusals; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [25815/99]

Clare County Council received 33 applications under the local improvements scheme in 1999. The council will complete 18 projects under the scheme this year. The council had 189 applications on hand at the end of 1998. Clare County Council's LIS allocation from my Department for 1999 is £211,300, an increase of 32% on the council's 1998 allocation of £159,500 under this scheme.

The administration of the LIS and the selection and prioritisation of schemes for funding is devolved to county councils, subject to the terms of my Department's local improvements scheme memorandum, 1997-1999, which states, inter alia, that in the selection of schemes, county councils should ensure, that as far as practicable, priority is given to schemes most requiring attention in the county as a whole.
