Vol. 512 No. 3

Written Answers - Staff Pay.

Michael Bell

Question:

259 Mr. Bell asked the Minister for the Environment and Local Government the level of gross pay for a 40 hour week applied to bin collectors in each local authority; his views on the fact that there is a difference of £100 per week between the highest and lowest paid; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26039/99]

Where a local authority provides a refuse collection service this is undertaken by the grade of refuse collector which is part of the national general operative grade structure. The level of remuneration of this group is agreed nationally and the current rate is £246.00 per week rising to £259.29.

Local differences in the earnings of refuse collectors can vary depending on such factors as the number of additional hours worked or performance bonus arrangements, for example, on the introduction of wheelie bins.
