Vol. 512 No. 6

Written Answers. - Tax Evasion.

Pat Rabbitte

Question:

38 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Minister for Finance the investigations, if any, carried out or planned into reports of the operation during the 1980s of a Liechtenstein based tax evasion scheme; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [26888/99]

I am advised by the Revenue Commissioners that they are examining the reports of the alleged tax evasion schemes involving Liechtenstein based operations. This examination is being handled by the special project team which was set up to deal with the Ansbacher accounts. The alleged schemes appear to be complex and to go back over a long period. A detailed examination will be involved. Revenue advise me that it is not possible at this stage to speculate on what the outcome of the examination will be. However, the Revenue Commissioners assure me that they will be using all their powers in an effort to uncover whatever tax evasion is involved in the alleged tax evasion schemes and to take all appropriate measures in relation to them.
