Vol. 513 No. 1

Written Answers. - Army Barracks.

Willie Penrose

Question:

212 Mr. Penrose asked the Minister for Defence if he has received a request for additional funding to enable the wall at Columb Barracks, Mullingar, County Westmeath, to be upgraded; if his attention has been drawn to the fact that Westmeath County Council is assisting in this refurbishment; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [1000/00]

On 25 July 1997 the Department dedicated a strip of land measuring about half an acre at Columb Barracks to Westmeath County Council for road widening purposes. As part of the agreement the council undertook to rebuild part of the barrack boundary wall on a shared cost basis.

I am informed that the works have not as yet been completed. The deed of dedication between the Department and the council provides for financial arrangements on apro-rata basis on completion of the works by the council. To date, no request for funds in relation to the agreement has been received by the Department.
