Vol. 513 No. 3

Written Answers. - Medical Certificates.

Alan Shatter

Question:

192 Mr. Shatter asked the Minister for Health and Children the expenditure, if any, which would be incurred by the State if it discharged, through each of the eight boards, the annual sums payable by drivers of 70 years of age and over for the obtaining of medical certificates to facilitate the renewal of driving licences. [2279/00]

My Department has no responsibility for driving licences generally nor for the specific requirement for drivers aged over 70 renewing their licences to obtain medical certificates. The Department of the Environment and Local Government which has such responsibility has, pending the completion of the computerised national driver licensing file, no statistics avail able on the numbers of drivers aged over 70 renewing their licences and accordingly in the absence of such information it is impossible to cost the matter of medical certificates in the manner sought by the Deputy.
