Vol. 513 No. 3

Written Answers. - School Staffing.

Róisín Shortall

Question:

318 Ms Shortall asked the Minister for Education and Science if, further to Parliamentary Question No. 223 of 1 December 1999, he has reached a decision on the recognition of an English trained teacher (details supplied) for appointment to the vacant post of resource teacher at Mother of Divine Grace School, Dub lin 11, in view of the fact that this post, which is vacant for four months, is based on the needs of special needs children and if they were attending special schools their teachers would not require the Irish qualification; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2438/00]

I am pleased to inform the Deputy that my Department has recently decided to recognise EU trained teachers as being acceptable to undertake resource teacher duties in primary schools, without the need to satisfy the Irish language qualification requirement. As a result of this development, the person to whom the Deputy refers will now qualify to take up a position of resource teacher in the school in question.
