Vol. 513 No. 3

Written Answers. - Student Accommodation.

Richard Bruton

Question:

322 Mr. R. Bruton asked the Minister for Education and Science the number of units of student accommodation which have been built under the Finance Act concession; and the plans, if any, he has to undertake a State financed initiative in the area of student accommodation. [2468/00]

As the Finance Act, 1999, and my Department's Guidelines on Residential developments for Third Level Students are of relatively recent origin it has not been possible to complete any residential developments to date. As relief will be available under the legislation for expenditure up to 31 March 2003, the opportunity exists to create significant additional accommodation for third level students and, therefore, I do not propose to intervene further at this stage.
