Vol. 513 No. 3

Written Answers. - Special Educational Needs.

Tony Gregory

Question:

334 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Education and Science his response to correspondence sent to his Department in October 1999 by a person (details supplied) in Dublin 7 and to the specific request for appropriate computer equipment which the school is applying for. [2645/00]

My Department operates a scheme for the provision of grants for second level schools towards the purchase of equipment for the use of pupils with certain disabilities or communication difficulties. The purpose of the scheme is to provide such pupils with equipment of direct educational benefit to them. Computer equipment and software are items that may be provided. Under the terms of the scheme the school authorities make an application in respect of an individual pupil. My officials have been in touch with the school authorities and with the mother of the student in question. I understand that the school submitted an application for an equipment grant on Friday of last week. The application once received will be processed by my Department without delay.
