Vol. 513 No. 3

Written Answers. - Irish Art Promotion.

Ivor Callely

Question:

127 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Foreign Affairs the proposals, if any, he has to promote art in the international arena; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2262/00]

The Department of Foreign Affairs is responsible for the promotion of Irish-linked cultural activities in other countries. Funding towards such events is allocated with the advice of the Cultural Relations Committee, an advisory body appointed by the Minister.

This is ongoing work which covers a broad range of cultural activity, under the main headings of theatre, dance, film, music, visual art and literature. The number of events supported in 1998 was 316. This level will be shown to have been maintained in 1999.

A copy of the report on cultural allocation in 1998 has been forwarded to the Deputy.
