173 Mr. Ring asked the Minister for Finance if he will introduce a car scrappage scheme, similar to the previous scheme, to help people purchase a new or second hand car on disposal of their old vehicles particularly in view of the high failure rate under the new car testing system. [2304/00]
174 Mr. Stanton asked the Minister for Finance the plans, if any, he has to introduce a new scrappage scheme for cars; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2308/00]
I propose to take Questions Nos. 173 and 174 together.
I have no plans to introduce a new car scrappage scheme. Sales of new cars are soaring – total net registrations for 1999 at 172,456 were 28,449 – 19.76% – ahead of 1998 and 37,241 – 27.54% – ahead of 1997.
