Vol. 513 No. 4

Written Answers. - Translation Services.

John Gormley

Question:

181 Mr. Gormley asked the Minister for Health and Children the plans, if any, he has to introduce translation services into hospitals to assist with the treatment of non-English speaking patients. [2823/00]

My Department is collaborating with all relevant Departments, under the aegis of the Interdepartmental Committee on Immigration, Asylum, and Related Issues, in addressing the needs of non-national persons residing in the State. In this regard, health agencies have been requested to provide all appropriate assistance, which might include the assignment of specific staff, as necessary, and to put in place arrangements for dealing with health related matters for such persons. The provision of translation services for non-English speaking patients will be considered by health agencies in the context of these arrangements.
