Vol. 513 No. 5

Written Answers. - Sports Capital Programme.

Ivor Callely

Question:

15 Mr. Callely asked the Minister for Tourism, Sport and Recreation the number of applications made under the last programme of national lottery funding; the number of applications which were successful; the number of applications which did not meet the criteria; the number of applications which were unsuccessful; if applications get prioritised; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2834/00]

The number of applications received under the 1999 sports capital programme was 1896. Following assessment of these applications, in accordance with the criteria outlined in the published guidelines for the programme, grants were allocated to 416 projects throughout the country.

Under the 1999 programme special priority was given to projects which were located in designated disadvantaged areas, in line with Government policy aimed at increasing participation in sport and recreation in these areas.

The 1,480 applicants, on being informed of their failure to get a grant in the 1999 round of allocations were invited to contact the Department if they wished to obtain a detailed explanation as to the reason why their particular application was unsuccessful. A significant number of these accepted this invitation.
