Vol. 513 No. 5

Written Answers. - Harbours and Piers.

Brian O'Shea

Question:

34 Mr. O'Shea asked the Minister for the Marine and Natural Resources the proposals, if any, he has to substantially improve the landing facilities at the pier in Helvick, County Waterford, and to provide for proper dredging at the pier; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [2880/00]

The harbour infrastructure at Helvick is owned by Waterford County Council and development of the facility is in the first instance the responsibility of the local authority.

I understand that the Department of Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands have provided financial assistance in the post for works at Helvick, and that Waterford County Council propose to pursue the question of funding for an extensive development servicing tourism and leisure needs with the Department of Arts, Heritage, Gaeltacht and the Islands and my Department. I will give careful consideration to any proposals from the local authority in respect of this proposed development, in the light of the available funding and overall development needs.
