Vol. 513 No. 6

Written Answers. - Medical Product Regulations.

Bernard Allen

Question:

275 Mr. Allen asked the Minister for Health and Children the plans, if any, he has to introduce new regulations to restrict the sale of paracetamol to pharmacies and under prescription only to amounts larger than one pack; and if he has received a report on this issue by the Irish Medicines Board. [3098/00]

Regulations to restrict the availability of paracetamol, in line with recommendations made by the Irish Medicines Board, are currently under consideration in my Department. These recommendations relate to pack size and availability in both pharmacy and non-pharmacy outlets and will subject packs of paracetamol above a specific size to prescription only control. I understand that many pharmacies are already operating within these guidelines in anticipation of the introduction of the new regulations.
