Vol. 513 No. 6

Written Answers. - Garda Dog Unit.

Tony Gregory

Question:

377 Mr. Gregory asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of sniffer dogs available to the Garda drug units; and the plans, if any, he has to increase the number. [2998/00]

I am informed by the Garda authorities that the Garda dog unit based in Dublin, which is available for deployment nationally, has a total complement of 16 dogs and that there are also Garda dogs available in Limerick and Cork. The unit consists of dogs trained in individual disciplines, such as general purpose drug detection and explosives detection. Some dogs are trained in more than one discipline.

The Garda authorities have informed me that the structure, function and resources allocated to the Garda dog unit is currently under review by the Garda Commissioner.
