Vol. 513 No. 6

Written Answers. - School Transport.

Gerry Reynolds

Question:

114 Mr. G. Reynolds asked the Minister for Education and Science the plans, if any, he has to extend school bus safety regulations to buses transporting pupils outside the current transport service; and if he will make a statement on the matter. [3335/00]

I note that the report by the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Education and Science on school transport in Ireland recommends that the current safety standards of the school transport scheme be extended to private services, outside the scheme. A full assessment of the various recommendations in the report, including the recommendation regarding private services is being carried out at present.

As soon as the assessment is completed I will give serious consideration to the recommendations including the question raised by the Deputy, in consultation with my colleague, Deputy O'Dea, the Minister of State with responsibility for school transport.
