Following an incident involving the Garda helicopter which occurred on 12 May 1999 over Crusheen, County Clare, an investigation was carried out by the air accident investigation unit of the Department of Public Enterprise. One of the recommendations of that investigation was that night operations in rural areas should be suspended with immediate effect until an effective programme of extra night flying training is completed by Garda air support unit pilots. This recommendation was accepted and is being acted upon. There are restrictions on night flying in rural areas. It has been decided to confine night operations to the greater Dublin area, where most operations arise in any event, subject to the normal limitations which apply to all air operations.
