Vol. 514 No. 1

Written Answers. - Crime Levels.

John Dennehy

Question:

209 Mr. Dennehy asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform the number of indictable crimes recorded in the Cork Garda regions in each of the past four years; the way in which these figures break down across the different categories of crime; the level of Garda manpower in Cork; the way in which this compares to the national average per 1,000 of the population; and if he will make a statement on the developments envisaged in Garda manpower. [3618/00]

Indictable crime statistics for the Cork divisions by crime categories and per 1,000 of the population can be found in the annual reports of the Garda Síochána, copies of which are available in the Oireachtas Library. The most recent annual report details the crime statistics for 1998.

I am informed by the Garda authorities that as of 7 February 2000, there were 584 gardaí, all ranks, attached to the Cork city division. The population of the Cork city division based on the 1996 Census of Population is 199,193 which gives a Garda to population ratio of 2.93 gardaí per 1,000 of population.

Nationally, there is approximately 3.0 gardaí per 1,000 of population. The Cork city ratio, therefore, compares favourably with the national ratio, as the National Garda units, based in Dublin, are included in the total strength of the force.
