Vol. 514 No. 1

Written Answers. - Closed Circuit Television Systems.

Mildred Fox

Question:

213 Miss Fox asked the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform when closed circuit televisions will be installed and operated in Bray, County Wicklow; and if the recruitment of specialists in closed circuit television has taken place. [3667/00]

Bray continues to be a top priority on the list of locations which have been prioritised for the installation of a Garda CCTV system by the CCTV Advisory Committee. While the Deputy may be aware that a shortage of technicians in the telecommunications section of the Garda Síochána, has severely impacted on the progress in implementing CCTV systems, I can also confirm that it is intended to commence this planning and implementation of the system in Bray and the other top priority locations at the earliest possible date.

I am also having the shortage of technicians addressed through the recruitment of 27 additional staff – 26 of whom have taken up duty. These technicians are being trained and I am advised they will become fully operational as quickly as possible. Allied to this development, I have initiated a review of CCTV with the objective of identifying proposals which will facilitate and accelerate the installation of these systems.
