Vol. 514 No. 1

Written Answers. - Work Permits.

Pat Rabbitte

Question:

91 Mr. Rabbitte asked the Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise, Trade and Employment the number of applications received from a company (details supplied) in County Meath for work permits for workers from outside the EU area in each of the past five years; the number of these applications granted; if her attention has been drawn to the comments reportedly made by the company that it had been employing Canadian miners without permits; the steps, if any, she will take in this regard; and if she will make a statement on the matter. [3487/00]

The admission of non-European Economic Area nationals to the State is a matter, in the first instance, for my colleague the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform.

However, I can confirm that applications were received by my Department from the company concerned a few weeks ago for a small number of work permits to employ non-EEA nationals here. No decision has been taken on these applications as yet.
